My father is very handy. He can literally build anything you want. When Britt and I bought our new house, we knew we would be spending a lot of time on our front porch. It is the South, after all! We just needed some seating. Of course, Dad was happy to oblige. He built some rather sturdy benches for us. The only thing they were missing was a personal touch. The solution: I painted this folk-inspired design right onto the wood. The bright ochre color really pops on the white-washed wood. And look, Minnie approves too!
Happy 2017!
A new year. A fresh start. A time to begin again! I'm proud to announce that I kept my resolution for 2016. Last year was great. I got married, bought a house... I can only imagine what's in store for me this year!
And what better way to start 2017 than with some super fun lettering? Happy new year!
My Rehearsal Dinner: The Design Details
In my last post, I talked about the design work I did for my wedding. Well, guess what? It doesn't end there. There's my rehearsal dinner, too!
My wedding's color palette was very clean: white and greenery. So I wanted the rehearsal dinner to be colorful and bold! My florist really set the mood with jewel-toned candles and luscious floral arrangements. Hand-lettered agate slices served as place cards for my guests.
There were little gift bags for my guests, which were full of little Savannah-inspired treasures. I made these by using simple paper bags, which I dressed up by adding a little bit of greenery and stamping with black wax. Take a closer look at the wax seal - it's my astrological sign! Proud Libra over here.
My Wedding: The Design Details
We did it - Britt and I made it official. We're married!
Our wedding day was a blur. We spent countless hours preparing for it, and then it just flew by! I wish I could go back and relive that entire day. Fortunately, I have beautiful photos by my friend and talented photographer Mackensey Alexander to remember it by.
I've done a lot of design-y things for other people's weddings. Paper goods, mostly. It's one of my favorite things to do, actually! And for my wedding, I knew I had to go ALL OUT. After all, as an illustrator and a designer, I really wanted my wedding to be a reflection of me.
First of all, Britt and I collaborated on the invitations. Britt created a tarot-inspired illustration for our save-the-dates. I designed and hand-lettered everything else, including a logo that could be printed on different things: napkins, to-go cups, you name it.
Also, I needed some good signage! My dad built some sandwich boards, which I hand-lettered on. To make them extra special, I added a bit of gold foil.
I really did have so much working on all the details of our wedding. I would love to do it all over it again. So... if you need some design work done for YOUR wedding, you know where to find me.
"Feel Good" Lyric Video
The Wild Honey Pie produced this lyric video for the band Walking Shapes, which Mo Ghayour and I animated. This animation was my first venture into lyric videos, and I'm very pleased with the end result. Like a mentioned in a previous post, pairing music and art together is always a pleasure.
Read the article The Wild Honey Pie released about the video's premier.
Bees & Eastern Seas
The Wild Honey Pie commissioned me to design this poster for an upcoming show, featuring The Eastern Sea, at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. I just started working with The Wild Honey Pie last week, so expect more pieces like this one in the future. ALSO - there isn't much I love more than the harmony of good music and good art together.
No iPads in the Boudoir!
An editorial illustration I recently completed for a womens' publication. The article was titled "How Technology Might Be Ruining Your Sex Life."
Wizard World Atlanta
A few weeks ago, Britt Spencer was invited to set up a booth at Wizard World Atlanta. He was kind enough to let me join him, so we packed up some prints and headed to Atlanta.
Above are some of the prints I was selling at our booth. I created the "Science" proof to accompany Britt's book Journey by Starlight (a beautiful graphic novel & great read), which turned out the be the most popular item we sold!
Overall, super fun weekend. I'm definitely looking forward to attending more conventions in the future. ICON or SGCI 2015 anyone?
Ibex t-shirt design
Of all the bestiary that adorn the objets d’art of the ancient Near East, none has had so long, nor so eventful, a life as the ibex. First appearing on Samarran ware about 5500 BC, the ibex was among the earliest of the animal images to be seen on Near Eastern pottery. The ibex remained a popular symbol in Mesopotamian art possibly because of it's long, branch-like anters, resembling the Tree of Life - a symbol of fertility.
The ibex received a contemporary look for a new t-shirt collection I'm designing based on the symbols of ancient civilizations.
With a little help from printmaking expert Britt Spencer and his screen press, the ibex design was printed on multiple shirts, included mens' & women's styles. There's something particularily satisfying about wearing my own designs; I've already begun designing more to screen print.
here's to you, Mom!
Here's a design I did for all you moms out there, especially Barbara Snow - the most wonderful mother and my very best friend.
Moms - THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO!
